National, February 18, 2021: Indian pop-culture enthusiasts finally have a reason to cheer in 2021 as after a year’s hiatus due to the on-growing COVID-19 pandemic, the grand Indian Comic Con season is back. Comic Con India, the country’s biggest pop culture extravaganza marks 10 glorious years of its power-packed experience and to commemorate the glorious one decade, it is organising a week-long digital celebration.

Kickstarting from February 15, the celebrations will have videos on showcase from all the creators and partners that participated during the 1st ever show held in New Delhi in 2011 along with its behind-the-scene moments. Legendary creator & writer Aabid Surti (creators of Bahadur & Dabooji), Reena Puri (Executive Editor, Amar Chitra Katha), Rajani Thindiath (Editor of Tinkle Magazine & Digest), Karan Vir Arora (Founder & Publisher, Vimanika Comics), Sanjay Gupta (Co-Creator, Raj Comics ) are some of the creators who will be a part of the video commemorations. Viewers can be a part of live chats with a few creators and guests who were present at the first show a special live session with the founder Jatin Varma on Comic Con India’s Instagram handle in an ‘Ask Anything’ format. Fan will also get to see the delightful commemorative artwork by Abhijeet Kini and Savio Mascarenhas.

Ahead of the digital event, Jatin Varma Founder of Comic Con India said,” This year Comic Con India crosses a milestone of completing 10 years in India and we are absolutely thrilled to kick off this anniversary with a week long digital celebration to commemorate the same. This one-week of nostalgia overload will take a look back at that epic first show in 2011, with a lot of throwbacks, panels with people who helped put it together and much more.

When we started the extravaganza, our intention was to just create a fun experience for ourselves and for other pop-culture fans out there. All these years, our journey has been successful due to the love and support of our fans, volunteers, our partners, exhibitors and sponsors. This digital celebration will enable them to relive the nostalgia.”

Jatin Varma brought the concept of International Comics Convention to India and started India’s very own Annual Indian Comics Convention on Feb 19-20th, 2011 at Dilli Haat in New Delhi. The show witnessed a participation of approximately 10000 people, with a few dozen cosplayers and 25-30 exhibitors. The idea was to create unique pop culture experience for fans in India.

Over the past 10 years across its shows nationwide, Comic Con India emerged as ‘India’s Greatest Pop Culture Experience’ delivering its signature #bestweekendoftheyear to more than 1.5 million visitors. July 2024, Goa: Located in Candolim, Aguad Port & Jail Complex has experienced a spectacular metamorphosis into a vibrant historical and culture centre, emerging as a clear venue winner to spend a day at, especially during the monsoons.

The premises play host to an array of art and culture exhibits, some housed within erstwhile jail cells, that comprehensively capture Goa’s history. Reached through a distinctive shoreline and pier, (weather permitting) Aguad is a fusion of modern and historical elements, such as a state-of-the-art digital museum, the Aguad Interactive Museum (AIM) that comprehensively captures stories of Goa – the land and the people. There are also three curated exhibitions on display at Aguad – ‘Indian Fashion, Timeless Elegance’ – which celebrates intricate craftsmanship, ‘Sahita Chitravali’, where the worlds of literature and art blend, and ‘Kamal’ – which connects visitors with India’s culturally versatile flower, the lotus.

In what was once the kaal kothri of the jail complex now stands a plush documentary screening theatre, the immersive Aguad Cinema, that runs films on the forts of Goa and the freedom struggle daily. For those interested in a deep-dive into history, there are heritage walks conducted daily (weather permitting) through the complex.

There is no shortage of events either, at this versatile venue. From jazz festivals and fetes, to art exhibitions and fashion shows, the picturesque setting of the iconic Port & Jail Complex has been abuzz with a plethora of events, especially in the months leading up to Christmas. Locals and tourists alike get a novel experience each time they visit Aguad. There are also varied workshops, from learning Warli and rock art, to self-development ones, that are hosted at Aguad during the monsoons.

Over and above the museum and exhibits, Aguad has several dining options to choose from, from coffee shops to bistros. All in all, the venue serves as a one-stop shop for all creative expressions, with their gates open daily from 10:00 AM up to 8:00 PM, allowing you to spend the better part of your day there while giving you a cultural experience unlike any other.
